Arequipa is one of the most historically rich Peruvian
cities. Evidence of the city's colonial history is
evident in extant Spanish manorial houses, monasteries
and convents, some of which date to the sixteenth
century. However, Arequipa's history is deeper and more
complex than this colonial architecture implies.
Archaeological evidence suggests that the area may have
been inhabited as early as 6000 BCE.
